INFORMATION RELEASE

Subject: Spot the Chief for a Ten SpotDate: 08-15-2013 11:41:56
From: Lt David CampbellCase or Incident: #N/A
Summary:

The Juneau Police Department has received five reports of bicycle vs. vehicle collisions since June 1st, 2013. In most incidents the vehicle drivers failed to see and respond appropriately to bicyclists, who had the right of way.

The Juneau Police Department, the Alaska Peace Officers Association-Capital City Chapter, Juneau Freewheelers, Bartlett Regional Hospital, and Cycle Alaska are joining together to ask drivers to be more aware of bicyclists. Also, school starts on August 20th and many students will be riding bicycles to and from school, so it is an especially important time to watch for bicycle riders.

To encourage drivers to watch for bicyclists on the road, Juneau Police Chief Bryce Johnson will be participating in a contest called, “Spot the Chief for a Ten Spot”. Chief Johnson will be riding his bike at various places around the CBJ during the week of August 19th through the 23rd. He will be wearing a distinctive spotted shirt. Chief Johnson’s picture showing the shirt, bike and helmet is posted below, and is also posted on juneaupolice.com.

When you spot Chief Johnson, call the chief’s assistant at 500-0674 and speak to her or leave a message. Only the first ten correct callers each day will be awarded the ten dollar prize. Please call when you are not driving, but within two hours. Give the time and place you saw Chief Johnson along with your name, phone number and license plate. Only the driver is eligible to win the ten dollars. If you are one of the first ten correct callers each day, you will be notified and you can pick up your ‘Ten Spot’ prize from JPD during business hours.

The Capital City Chapter of the Alaska Peace Officers Association is providing the cash for the prizes. All of the ten dollar winners will be entered into a drawing for a bike tune up from Cycle Alaska.

Have a great back to school week and don’t forget to “Spot the Chief for a Ten Spot.”
