Subject: Shoplifter foiled by his own actionsDate: 03-26-2014 03:04:23
From: Erann Kalwara - JPD PIOCase or Incident: #140325-005
Summary: On March 25th 2014 at about 09:38am, the Juneau Police Department received a call from staff at Safeway reporting that a male had put several pairs of sunglasses into his pockets and then left the store without paying for the items.

The shoplifter was followed out of the store and contacted by a Safeway employee. The employee asked him to pay for the sunglasses. The shoplifter refused and ran out to friend’s truck that had been parked in the parking lot and then left the area.

The shoplifter had been in the store to complete a financial transaction and had shown identification to a different clerk just prior to pocketing the sunglasses. He even completed a form with contact information on it which was later provided to the responding officer.

Through clever actions on the part of several Safeway employees and with some assistance from the responding officer, the suspect was quickly identified as a 26 year old Juneau resident.

The officer contacted the suspect by using the phone number provided on the form. The suspect answered the phone and told the officer that he took the sunglasses and left because he ‘freaked out.’ He agreed to have the sunglasses delivered to JPD.

The JPD officer has forwarded charges to the City Attorney’s office for larceny of property. The value of the sunglasses is approximately $14.99 for each pair.
