The Juneau Police Department would like to remind everyone planning to celebrate the arrival of 2018, to plan for a designated driver if your celebration involves impairing substances and going out. Juneau CHARR is also offering a Safe Ride Home program on New Year’s Eve from participating locations, just look for a taxi with green flashing lights.

Even though New Year’s Eve falls on a Sunday, additional JPD officers have been assigned to work to cover the holiday weekend. JPD officers will also be instructed to actively seek out and investigate drivers who might be impaired by alcohol or other drugs.

This is also a reminder that the safe use of concussive fireworks will be legal from 10:00 AM to 1:00 AM on New Year’s Eve and from 10:00 to 11:59 PM on New Year’s Day. Using concussive fireworks outside of this time period, and south of Cohen Drive, is prohibited.

JPD is in the process of wrapping up the 2017-Year of Kindness initiative. Driving sober and the proper use of fireworks is an act of kindness.
