With the recent inclement weather, roadway conditions have worsened. This has caused numerous motor vehicle crashes and vehicles sliding off of the roadway. These conditions are expected to be present tonight, as well as tomorrow.

Department of Transportation and City and Borough of Juneau Streets crews are aware of the conditions and are working continuously to improve Juneau roads.

If you are driving on snowy or icy roads, remember the following:

-Slow down. Even if you have all-wheel drive, reduce your speed about 10 miles per hour below the speed limit. If it still feels iffy, cut back another five miles per hour until you're comfortable.

-Avoid tailgating. On the highway, leave about 100 yards (about the length of a football field) between you and the car ahead of you to give you plenty of room to stop in case that person brakes suddenly.

-Your headlights should be used during any situation with lowered visibility, even during the day.

-Never use your phone or other devices that could be distracting while driving.

-Look for pedestrians crossing the streets.

Pedestrians, be safe. Look both ways before crossing the roadway and don't assume that everyone can see you. Stop and make eye contact with the driver of the stopped vehicles; make sure they see you. Only proceed into the intersection when it's safe to do so.

The Juneau Police Department reminds drivers tonight and tomorrow to please give yourself extra time to get to your destination, drive at reasonable speeds for the conditions, and be cautious of pedestrians as braking distances may increase with the icy roadways.

If driving during the inclement conditions isn't absolutely necessary, consider staying at home.
