SWAT professionalism

As we use this week to reflect on the loss of our 2 brothers in Hoonah. I wanted to take a few minutes to thank the Juneau PD S.W.A.T., Explosive Ordinance Disposal, and Crisis Negotiation teams for their tireless efforts in making sure that the person allegedly responsible for this horrible act was jailed.
Leaving their families behind, they braved the unknown; some of them standing watch for 24 hours without rest. Their professionalism shined through and we are very proud of them.
Thank you brothers and sisters, carry on!

Last Dayof Dispatch Academy

Last night I came home from my last day in dispatch academy to my wife and 3 teenage daughters with big smiles and lots of hugs. There was a cake and a card signed by the four of them with heartfelt sentiments of congratulations. It is so meaningful to me because I asked them before starting at JPD if they would be able to be supportive, and “go with me” on the job. I knew that if I took this position, the hours and the nature of shift work would present our family with challenges we have never faced before. Even though I haven’t started on that phase of being a dispatcher yet, I feel confident that the love and support of my four ladies at home (and our adult children) will be a huge factor in my success at JPD. A big shout out to Christa, Rhonny, Tori & Fiona for letting me know that they’re behind me 100%!

The last week of academy was for sure my most challenging as most of our training was centered around Emergency Medical Dispatch certification, and all the study and mock scenarios that go with that. Thanks to Margie Ramos and her excellent instruction and guidance we recruits are that much closer to being ready for all those medical calls. A special thanks to Christy Smith and her cameo appearance as several VERY distraught callers during role playing. Next stop, Comm Center!

We are half way through our last week in dispatch academy. We are currently using Emergency Medical Dispatch guide cards (shown in the photo above) and practicing mock 911 calls while using the guide cards. A reporter from the Juneau Empire came on Tuesday to conduct a brief interview with each member and take a photograph of the dispatch academy. We hope to see the article in the paper soon. We are very excited to complete the academy and begin our training in the communications center next week!

Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch is a program where citizens in a neighborhood come together to keep an eye on crime in their area. Similar programs with different names are active in many countries including Russia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The basic idea behind Neighborhood Watch is for neighbors to set up a communication network with each other, and keep an eye on suspicious activity in their neighborhoods. Each neighborhood has different issues that they wish to have addressed by the police. In getting together, each neighbor can voice their concerns amongst each other, and then put it all together to tell the police. Issues such as vandalism or suspicious vehicles can be addressed proactively by the police by increasing patrols in the area when available.

If you’re interested in starting a Neighborhood Watch group in your area, or would like to learn more information regarding the program, call the Juneau Police Department at 586-0600, and ask to speak with Officer John Cryderman.
