Q. I have a family that needs a car seat for riding in a cab. Where can they get a car seat?

Dear Juneau Resident,

Traveling with children is challenging enough without toting car seats and such. Nevertheless, the car seat is the one thing that shouldn’t be downsized out of your travel gear.

An amendment to AS 28.05.095 passed on September 15, 2009, stating that all children under 4’9’’ and 65 lbs must be secured in a child-safety seat. This includes taxi cabs. Some cab companies do have child seats available, but call ahead and confirm the availability of appropriate sizes.

Another option may be borrowing a car seat. One way to go about doing so is through the website JuneauParents.com. You’ll have to become a member and run the risks that are always associated with making connections via the internet. However, it’s free, easy, and may offer a simple solution. Similar posts have been made in the past, seemingly with positive results.

Most airlines (including Alaska Airlines) will waive the baggage fee when checking car seats, so that’s free too! Check it, forget about it, and grab it on the other end. Just look at it this way… packing a car seat around will seem like such a minuscule task once baby hits his or her teens.

FYI -JPD administers the SAFEKIDS program. People can call JPD and make an appointment to get a seat at a reduced rate, depending on income. JPD community service officers really like making sure kids in cars are safe so they will work with people concerning the money part. JPD has seats in a variety of sizes.
