Q. I just wanted to say that on Valentine's Day the people who were blocking the road way did a professional job and they were very polite. Are these people that were in plain clothes off duty JPD officers? The 2 people did their best to keep traffic clear, or did a good job keeping traffic going to prevent a pile up. They did a great job keeping the road lit with flares, and lights to be noticed. I did see one of the people who was telling cars about the accident almost get hit by some jerk who ran through their road block. If these were regular citizens just helping out, how can other's help out if a case were to happen like this again? Do I call JPD and say that I am helping out, or what can I do to help?

Dear Juneau Resident,

The people you saw helping JPD with that traffic collision are members of the Juneau Citizens Patrol (JCP). These great volunteers get training and some equipment from JPD and are a resource for big calls where we have a large perimeter, traffic collisions, and function as unmarked patrol to find DWI drivers and observe other crimes. It's hard to say enough good things about the JCP volunteers, they are that valuable.

You can volunteer to be part of the group by calling 586-0600 and asking for the Patrol Lieutenant. He can steer you in the right direction. We are concerned that someone almost ran down one of the volunteers at that collision scene. If you have a license plate or detailed description of the vehicle and/or driver please report that information to JPD dispatch.
