Q. I just was on Facebook, where I read that someone posted about killing me. What can I do about this threat? I am pretty sure it is just talk, but I feel I must take defensive measures

Dear Juneau Resident,

You should report the threat though the threat does not have the same legal consequences as a threat made in person where there could be an imminent danger of an actual assault. Once you report the threat the assigned officer can get more detail and see if the situation is appropriate for a protective order prohibiting stalking or domestic violence.

The assigned officer can also determine if there is any coercion or extortion going on by getting more information about the totality of the circumstances.

Even if there is no law violation that can be attached, it's worth a phone call to document the threat and the person involved. You will want to capture a screen shot of the threat. You can even take a picture with a cell phone and we can work with that.
