Questions Posted to "Ask a Dispatcher"

Q. So . . . a dispatcher has access to ALL of my information????? How do I know they aren't spreading that information around to my friends or other people who know me? It sounds like they can look up anyone!

Dear Juneau Resident,

The dispatcher gets access to all this information under confidentiality restrictions. The information must be for law enforcement uses only. The Alaska Public Safety Information System (APSIN) does audits to make sure all queries are legitimate and gives police departments lists of queries to verify and provide case information.

A dispatcher would be very foolish to violate the rules because the dispatcher would no longer be able to use APSIN and that means the person can no longer be a dispatcher. Ouch. If anyone ever suspects such a leak it should be reported to the head of the agency involved or the Department of Public Safety, where APSIN lives, immediately.
