Q. In a newspaper article yesterday (11/4) about the parking meters, a line read, "The system would provide up to two hours of free parking while preventing drivers from exploiting the system by simply moving to a new spot." This came as a complete surprise to me - it's not illegal to move to a new parking spot, adhering to the time limit for each spot, is it??

Dear Juneau Resident,

A parking zone can have different objectives. Most of the time it is either to turn spaces over so people can use the area businesses or generate revenue through parking fees. If someone uses a two hour free spot then moves one spot up for another two hours neither objective is being served. This is what leads to attempts to restrict drivers from using the two free hours more than once a day.
