Q. Is it legal to use an atv to plow snow from driveways considering you have to be on the street part of the time? Do you know of any reading material for this subject?

Dear Juneau Resident,

It is not possible to make an ATV street legal in Juneau, no matter how many accessories you add. JPD does know that some people still use them for snow plowing, and some people even put snow plows on the front of lawn mowers. Lawn mowers are also not capable of being made street legal. Officers are taught to be reasonable, an ATV crossing slightly into a street moving snow is not a zero tolerance crime but charging up and down the street, giving the kids a ride is certainly going to be addressed by a passing officer. An officer is also look to see if the ATV use is creating any kind of a hazard for people or property. As usual, the officer has to consider the totality of the circumstances and decide the course of action.
