Q. There is a stripped car sitting in the parking lot of Skater's Cabin. Does DOT or JPD take care of this?

Dear Juneau Resident,

JPD is on it! Haven't heard of DOT taking abandoned cars but if they want some JPD could come up with some doosies. We once had half a Volkswagon in the impound yard. Who would cut a Volkswagon in half?

One of JPD's community service officers saw the stripped car at Skater's cabin yesterday and hung an intent to impound tag on it. Those tags are the bright colored tags that let the car owner know that the clock is ticking on moving the car. If we get to the deadline on the tag and the car is still there JPD hooks it and books it (into the impound yard). That particular car will be removed soon.

JPD will then look up the registered owner of the car and try to recover the fees for storage and disposal. If the car is worth anything it may be auctioned to cover at least a fraction of the cost to impound, store and dispose of the car.

Anyone who sells a car should file a transfer pending notice with DMV providing the purchaser's name. You don't want to face a bill if the new owner trashes and abandons the car.
