Questions Posted to "Ask a Dispatcher"

Q. I am interest in this career.i need help getting started.i have couple of questions.what courses should I take to become a dispatcher?

Dear Juneau Resident,

There aren't college courses or classes that teach you to be a dispatcher. Most agencies put on their own 'school' to train new dispatchers in that agencies computer programs and radio systems. The good news is you get paid to learn the job.

There are tests to get hired that measure typing speed and reading comprehension so you could take classes in those disciplines to try and improve your chances of being hired.

For more information you can call JPD at 586-0600 and ask to speak to the communications supervisor.
