Q. How often do jobs open up for dispatchers? Where would one apply?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Dispatch hiring has been closed for awhile but we are planning to open it back up. We have already hired for the July 19th dispatch academy but our hiring list is almost exhausted after that.
In thinking about our timeline, we take into account that the dispatch academy is five weeks and the staff is pretty tuckered out after getting a class through. Our plan is to get through that academy and then look at doing an initial test in August or September. The first round of testing looks at the candidate's computer skills and ability to multi-task. Then there is the background investigation and psych exams to determine if the candidate is likely to be successful in dispatch. All of that takes several months.
Then the current dispatching staff would ramp up for the next dispatch academy, early 2011-ish. Look for a hiring announcement in the next few weeks with a test in the fall-August or September.
