Questions Posted to "Ask a Dispatcher"
Q. hello. I called Sunday afternoon to report a gentleman who was laying on a wooden railing across from the subport lot. I did not think he was breathing and I was wondering if you can tell me the outcome. Thanks.
Dear Juneau Resident,
I want to thank you for being concerned about others. It is nice to live in a community that doesn't let someone in distress be ignored. In more callous communities people are sometimes ignored while in the middle of a medical emergency and can die with no one paying attention.
In this case, the gentlemen was actually just enjoying the sun, not even too much to drink. Better safe than sorry!
I know it is uncomfortable and inconvenient but dispatchers do ask people to approach a person they are concerned about and try to get a little more information. Since dispatchers and other responders have to err on the side of caution, we roll CCFR responders when someone calls in an unresponsive person, but doesn’t stop to get additional details. In this case, the man's nap was interrupted by some very nice firefighters.
