Q. My kids just found a bicycle labeled "Free Bike" (a hand written note was attached) leaning near the street light outside of our home. Before we take it in I'd like to know if there is a way to find out if it is stolen? It's a burgandy/Red Raleigh M-30 Mountain/Trail Serial # R(redacted).

Dear Juneau Resident,

Thank you for taking the time to check and see if the bike is stolen! JPD doesn't have a report of a stolen bike with that serial number. There are some possible matches by color and make. Juneau gets similar bikes by the container full so the possible matches don't necessarily mean it's stolen.

If the bike is nice enough that it isn't reasonable that someone abandoned it willingly, maybe a free ad in the classified section of the newspaper would address any misgivings. Your child could participate and get to experience how good it feels to take the extra step to make sure you are doing the right thing.

Hmmm(thinking). What a great idea on how to get rid of a bike a family member abandoned and said could be hauled to the dump. If anyone needs a very large frame road bike, for someone 6'3" ish, you might want to travel Riverside Drive Saturday afternoon...
