Q. How long do the police store evidence before it's retuned back to the owner? A few years ago my roommate got in trouble with the law and the police came in our apartment at took my laptop as well as my other roommate's Xbox. The case is closed and the third roommate who got in trouble is now in jail. Is there any way that I can come get my laptop from the police department? There are a lot of important items like picture ect, that were only saved on that laptop. I didn't have anything to do with the case so I don't see why my stuff hasn't been return to me... I hope it didn't get thrown out after the case was closed...

Dear Juneau Resident,

JPD's area for evidence storage is limited so we don't hang onto items unless we need to. Once a case is closed and all legally required retention periods have been met, here is a list of what can happen.

1) released to its lawful owner;
2) transferred to this or other jurisdictions by court order;
3) destroyed;
4) converted to safekeeping status;
5) auctioned, traded, or sold as required by law.

Typically JPD's evidence specialist sends a letter to the owner and asks them to pick up the item. Sometimes JPD gets a response and sometimes we don't. The best thing for you to do is call the evidence specialist at 586-0664 with enough information for her to find which case you mean. She can check and see if any of the property shows you as the owner and its status. Then you can work out an appointment to pick up any property that goes to you.
