Q. I notice what looks like cameras at some of the intersections mounted up near the stop lights recently. What are they? What's the story?

Dear Juneau Resident,

Those devices are not JPD owned or operated equipment so I tried the 'Ask DOT' service on the department of transportation website. It worked like a charm and here is the skinny;

"Thank you for contacting me at the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.

Regarding your question about devices mounted on Juneau area traffic signals, those are video detection cameras. When a vehicle pulls up to an intersection that is equipped with video detection and the signal is red, the camera detects the presence and puts in a call for a green ball.
