Q. My son is driving on a provisional license. Technically the 6 months was up last week but due to sports and school we haven't had the opportunity to take him to DMV to get the regular license. Today we caught him driving with his girlfriend. He says his buddies told him that since the time was up it didn't matter, we believe he was violating the law because he is still officially on a provisional. Who is right?

Dear Juneau Resident,

His buddies are wrong. The only time provisional status expires automatically is when he turns 18 since someone older than 18 cannot hold a provisional status license. Prior to 18, the restriction is off when DMV says it is off.
