Q. I recently lost my keys. Where do I go to see if anyone turned them in?

Dear Juneau Resident,

If you think you lost them in or near a business you should call that business to see if anyone turned them in. Many have lost and found items in a specific box or on a shelf. If you think you lost the keys in a public area, unassociated with any staffed business or office, you can call us to see if they have been brought here.

The records department at JPD has a collection of keys people have found and brought to us. The last time anyone brought keys in was months ago so we probably don't have yours. It doesn't hurt to check. Just call 586-0600 and ask for the lost keys to be checked for your stray keys.

On a safety note, if you think it is likely you lost your keys near your home, re-keying is something you will want to consider. Same thing if anything on your keychain identifies you or where you live. Though if you do have a grocery store or gym membership card, a good samaritan might bring the keys to that business so they can contact you.
