Q. If the next if kin has been notified for the suicidal subject, when will the public
Know? I am worried it is someone I know.

Dear Juneau Resident,

As you have probably seen in the paper, there is a large debate in Juneau right now about names of those who completed a suicide and if or when those names should be (1) released by JPD and (2) published by the local media.

It is a complicated issue from JPD's side. The Public Records Act basically says unless an exception protects a person's name from being released, it must be released. However, the Public Records Act may not be the only legal instrument impacting the release of this type of sensitive information since case law can also come into play. Local policies and procedures are being reviewed right now.

To date, the release of names in this situation is still very much an evolving issue with legal considerations and emotional impacts weighing in.
