Q. How come all the bigger drug bust arent advertised, I have noticed lately, by reading the daily bulletin that there have been other busts, but they arent advertised, have seperate articles written on them, or on the radio. Also, how come some are advertised everywhere, articles written in/on the front page of the paper, on the news for multiple days, etc. Then they are fallowed up upon and we hear the outcome, then you have others that are the same serious offense, with the same possible punishment and they are just listed in the daily bulletin and not heard of? It would be nice that we should be more informed on who, what, when, where, why, and how, equally...

Dear Juneau Resident,

Supervisors have some discretion on when to issue press releases. Of course, higher level crimes usually generate public interest and get a press release. The supervisor also considers other factors like whether or not the incident resulted in a fatality or serious injury. He or she would also consider if the incident in public view. There would be a news release if the public needed to be warned about a hazard. If children are involved JPD would likely send out a release. We might also send out a release if the department needed information from the public or the public was inconvenienced (like with a road closure)? If the incident is one where a large number of people would likely make inquiry we might be proactive with a news release. JPD might also use a release to address unnecessary public alarm or rumors.

Even if there is no press release, each JPD case is noted in the daily bulletin.

The press gets to make their own decision on how much exposure to give each incident. JPD doesn't have any influence on that process.

What many people do, even JPD employees, is when they check newspapers in the morning, they also check and look for new press releases.
