Q. Companies are offering kits to make your side by side ATV street legal. What equipment do I need in Alaska to make my ATV street legal? I'd assume, turn signals, brake lights, horn, mirrors? What am I missing?

Dear Juneau Resident,

You might want to save your money. I think the hitch you will run into is getting the license plate to operate on a public street since DMV treats ATVs like snowmachines. Here is what is noted on the Department of Motor Vehicle's website. It looks like the only way to register an ATV is for snow removal, seasonally, with low pressure tires. DMV says ATVs cannot be modified to be street legal.

State of Alaska
Division of Motor Vehicles
Standard Operating Procedures
SOP No. R-135 Page No. 1 of 3
Effective November 20, 2007
Subject: Supersedes R-135 Dated 12/15/00
SNOW VEHICLES (ATVíS & SNOWMOBILES) Approved
Statute: AS 28.39.010 - 250 Regulation: 2 AAC 92.110
Form No. 808, 812
A snowmobile is a self-propelled vehicle primarily designed or altered for travel on snow or ice when
supported in part by skis, belts, or cleats. This does not include machinery used strictly for the
grooming of snow vehicle trails or ski slopes. All-terrain vehicles (ATVís) are designed and
constructed for off-highway use making registration optional [AS 28.10.011 (1)], except in the case of
a vehicle with low pressure tires that may qualify as a snow vehicle. ATVís cannot be modified to be
street legal. If a customer requests registration of an ATV, the procedures are the same as for
snowmobiles.
