Q. I saw someone asked if this town was safe to raise kids.. And you guys answered yes there are things to do like high school activites the pool ice skating.. but What about when you are outta high school? or dont like sports. Ive lost a lot of friends to drugs and I feel like thats all this town is becoming that or girls gettin pregnant. i think something needs to be done

Dear Juneau Resident,

There are lots of options for adults as well, including having a job, going to college (UAS is right down the road), or going to other training programs. All of those activities go a long way to encouraging people to stay out of trouble. After that, it's totally open as to outdoor activities, internet games, volunteering, catching a movie now and then...

However, JPD doesn't want to imply there is a direct correlation between available entertainment and drug use or other behavior people come to regret. The excuse of 'There is nothing to do.' has been used in communities of all sizes all over the country to justify bad personal decisions.

It is also not realistic to think that it is the community's responsbility to entertain people so completely that they won't do drugs. There are many celebrities who had access to, literally, all the entertainment in the world and still did drugs.

It sounds like you want to be healthy and are unhappy about the loss of your friends to drugs. I hope you can encourage your remaining friends to take responsibility for their lives and don't wait for someone to come along and convince them to pursue a certain activity rather than drugs. They need to go out and find their path, whatever is right for them, and maybe you can support them in that goal.
