Q. IS it illegal to drive while wearing flip-flops or sandals?

Dear Juneau Resident,

It is legal to drive in flip-flops and sandals. However, it is a good idea to make sure any shoes used for driving work appropriately with the pedal surfaces and the spaces next to and below the pedals. The driver is always responsible for what the vehicle does so you could still be cited for reckless driving or some other offense if your shoe gets caught and your driving causes a collision or someone else has to take evasive action to avoid a collision with you.

Some people keep slip on shoes in the car just for driving. Women's high heels have been known to get wedged between the gas pedal and floor and more than one woman has had to yank a shoe off the gas pedal. That is so dangerous! JPD suggests playing it safe and when you are driving. No one in other cars can see your feet anyway so driving is a good time to put function before fashion.
