Q. I heard that if a female is getting arrested, a male officer is allowed to search her, even if she asks for a female cop? Is this true??

Dear Juneau Resident,

Yes. JPD, like many other agencies, especially in Alaska, has few female officers. We have four female officers and only one is assigned to patrol. One female is a detective, one is a school resource officer, and one is in administration. Odds of a female being searched and a female officer being available at the same time...very slim. Male officers are encourage that, when possible, to use the car camera to record opposite gender searches, use other officers to witness, and sometimes narrate search into an audio recorder. If the situation is a search warrant service and the intel is the woman is carrying the drugs in a very intimate place, a female is scheduled to be part of that warrant service. Most of the time JPD doesn't have advance notice of a female needing to be searched.

JPD is also always looking to hire qualified female officers and has one of the only chiefs in the state who is a card carrying member of the Women Police of Alaska Association as part of his support of diversity and community mirroring in the officer ranks.
