Q. Hi there!
I was wondering in alaska is it legal to have two license plates? I have seen people driving with an out of country front license plate, but with the alaska plate in the back. Also, is it legal to just have the back license plate?

Dear Juneau Resident,

Two license plates are required. It is not a zero tolerance issue and you may not see a lot of people pulled over for the offense. If an officer sees someone driving in the opposite direction with no front plate the officer is probably going to decide to let the violation go rather than violate any traffic laws and create any risk to the public trying to catch the person. No officer would want to be standing tall in front of a sergeant saying he or she crossed the median for a missing front plate violation.

Not having a front plate is an open invitation to get pulled over so there are probably many people out there who would put the front plate on if that fact were commonly known. Also, if your car is stolen, having both plates on make it twice as likely that an officer will be able to positively identify your car as a stolen car.
