Q. If 3 items were stolen from a house and we know who the person was that took them, is there something the police can do other than just question that person?

Dear Juneau Resident,

It really depends on the specifics of the case. Often victims have a strong feeling about who committed a crime but the police have to decide what can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Victims sometimes become frustrated with the level of proof the police need for a prosecuteable case.

Burglary cases may be solved long after the crime is committed because the property or information about the property turns up in a later case or because someone talked long after the fact. People who steal stuff often keep stealing stuff and cases flow together.

The police may approach a suspect early on if there is a solid link between the theft and the person. Maybe the suspect pawned the item or bragged about the theft. Certainly if a witness saw the suspect take the item, he or she would be interviewed pretty early on to see if they had an alibi or a that it settled a debt between the two parties.

Each case is going to be unique so the best thing you can do is talk to the assigned investigator. If you don't know who that is, you can call the sergeant in charge of the investigations unit and find out.

I hope you get your stuff back! It is a very personal violation to have something taken from your home.
