Q. Is it legal to burn pallets on non-Forest Service beaches as long as it is in a pit and people are being responsible?

Dear Juneau Resident,

The issue with pallets all comes down to littering. You could have a fire if you removed all the staples, nails, and tacks from the pallets prior to burning them to make sure no kids, dogs, or other beach wanders stepped on them. That would be a lot of work so I don't think even responsible people would do that! It would be easier just to get wood without staples.

Because burning pallets leaves a litter that is hazardous to the public the activity fall under CBJ Ordinance 36.30.030 and comes with a steep fine of $200 for a first offense.
