Q. I'm confused about why the recent press release regarding an abduction/assault chose to disclose that the victim had just prior had a disagreement with her significant other. It seems to be a private detail with no significance for we public. Can u explain?

Dear Juneau Resident,

While JPD doesn't want to be unnecessarily personal in press releases but when we ask the public for information we do need to provide some sort of context or descriptions so the public knows if they saw something even loosely related to the incident.

If someone leaving the bar before the incident saw the argument and JPD only said a woman was walking in the Valley at 1:00 a.m., the witness may not call us to say a certain person seemed particularly interested in a woman who argued with a man and walked away or that a certain kind of car followed her. Details like the ones provided in the press release could cause a witness to remember something about what happened, especially since it was outside a public place. Maybe someone heard someone talking about picking up a woman after she argued with someone.

If JPD doesn't have good descriptions of vehicles or people or wants to keep those descriptions confidential at first because of characteristics of the case, a description of what was going on maybe JPD's best way to get witnesses to realize that they witnessed something important. JPD would like to gather any information out there about this incident so we are hoping for some leads from the public.
