Q. I see a lot of people gathering large rocks from the Stabler's Point Quarry near the roadside and have wondered if they are breaking any laws. It seems like the CBJ blasts the rock and it's not for public consumption. Can you shed any light on this? Thanks!

Dear Juneau Resident,

If the rocks are near the roadside then they are fair game, like picking berries or gathering branches for a campfire. If the rocks are closer to the quarry, like up the road posted for no trespassing, then there is a problem. JPD would likely opt for a trespassing charge rather than rock theft. Our evidence custodian would have an officer's head for giving her stolen rocks to inventory and store. (Those officers who have made prior mistakes like giving her a backpack for safekeeping without removing a stray tunafish sandwich...have learned that at all costs, do not mess with the evidence custodian!)
