Questions Posted to "Ask a Dispatcher"

Q. I am interested in becoming a dispatcher. The CBJ website doesn't list the next available testing dates or hiring dates - does anyone know them? I've heard through the grapevine that you are very short handed.

Dear Juneau Resident,

We plan on posting dispatcher job openings in two or three months. Just keep monitoring the CBJ website for information.

The training period for public safety dispatcher is about four months with the first month being an academy here at JPD. Then the field training portion is about three months with a pretty cushy schedule of four ten hour shifts. Depending on how many people complete the training program, there may be substantial overtime required immediately after training. Dispatching pays very well but applicants need to be mentally prepared for a satisfying but demanding job.

If you are interested in a dispatching job I suggest you contact JPD, 586-0600, and ask for a lead dispatcher or the dispatch unit supervisor. You can arrange to observe the dispatch unit for up to two hours. Between calls you can talk to the dispatchers about how they manage personal and family obligations around shift work and overtime.
