Q. How long can a car park in a street side parking spot before itís considered abandoned? Parking downtown is a hot commodity and there is a light blue Jeep that has been parked in the same spot, with a flat tire, for a couple of weeks now! Who can this be reported to?

Dear Juneau Resident,

Once I car has been left in the same place over 48 hours it is considered abandoned/junked, under 36.30.230(a). There is a $295 fine and the vehicle is impounded. JPD community service officers (CSOs) are primarily the JPD employees who write tickets and do impounds under this ordinance, though patrol officers sometimes do the same. You can call JPD can report those situations to the CSOs.

CSOs will usually put one of those bright pink tags on the vehicle and give the owner some time to move the vehicle. That is exactly what recently happened to the vehicle you specifically mentioned (plate and location were edited in case someone is shopping for a cheap Jeep door). The Jeep was tagged for impound a couple of days ago. If the owner doesnít do something with it, it will be gone soon!

We call the ordinance Abandoned SLASH Junked Vehicles because some owners get pretty offended if you imply a 1983 Subaru with no floor boards and a gas tank on the passenger seat with a tube to the engine could possibly be junk. The fixer upper is in the eye of the beholder.
