Q. Just out of curiosity, has the number of parking tickets issued downtown increased or decreased since the parking meters went in?

Dear Juneau Resident,

It is too soon into using the new system to tell what the long term impact will be. While the new parking system is in use there is still tweaking and testing on the equipment side and a learning curve on the user side. That means lots of warnings and few tickets of late. It will probably be a few more months before JPD can say the system has worked with no problems for a substantial period and time spent on enforcement is comparable to what was done under the old system. Then we can compare apples to apples.

As with any enforcement system or action, our goal at JPD is not necessary to write more tickets, but instead to encourage compliance with the law. We would be happy if there were no tickets…as long as the law is complied with. We are hopeful the new parking system will encourage more compliance, thereby providing for fair and equitable access to the limited parking available downtown.
