Q. What is the proper headlights for vehicles? I keep seeing green, blue, purple tinted (cont)

Dear Juneau Resident,

CBJ ordinance 72.04.020 (a) specifies headlights are to be white. The applicable section is at the end of this answer. JPD did recently issue a citation for green headlights. The young man appeared in court with a receipt showing he had paid to change the lights to white lights and the city made the citation a warning. JPD is more concerned with stopping the array of colored headlights showing up rather than collecting fines.

There are some factory headlights with a slight blue tint. Those are generally on high end cars and actually do provide for better visibility than standard lights so JPD is fine with those. Citations are written on headlights where someone uses an after market item to mimic the blue tint which most certainly is not an improvement over the standard.

Except as otherwise provided in this chapter or 13 AAC 04, a motor vehicle must be equipped with at least two headlights, one on each side of the front of the motor vehicle. The headlights must emit white light to the front of the vehicle, comply with the requirements and limitations set out in this section, and be mounted at a height of not more than 54 inches or less than 24 inches.
