Q. How long does it take from when someone gets in trouble for the officers to complete the paperwork, turn it into the DA's office and for the charges to show up in the court records online with a case number?
Dear Juneau Resident,
The answer to this question is going to be different for just about every case. The time between the act and someone being charged depends on multiple factors. There may be additional investigation needed. Sometimes officers have to wait for medical records or bank records. Maybe a witness is being elusive or uncooperative. Other cases may jump ahead when investigative priorities are set because the other case has tasks that need to be done immediately or the suspect is an on going danger to the community.
I know the wait can be very stressful for people who were victimized and are waiting to see what the prosecutor is going to do. You can call the assigned investigator or that person's supervisor and ask about an estimated time for charges to be filed.
Once the case is filed you would have to check with the prosecutor as to his or her timeline for reviewing the case. The prosecutor then has to prioritize what gets prosecuted and when. It is common to see many months pass between an event and someone being charged.
