Q. I'm considering becoming a "freegan" which entails dumpster diving. Is dumpster diving illegal?

Dear Juneau Resident,

You have some legal issues to consider but there is no ordiance or law specifically prohibiting dumpster diving. The legal issues to consider are that you cannot go onto private property to access trash, that would be criminal trespass. You also have to avoid creating a litter problem. JPD officers have experience with checking dumpersters for evidence of a particular crime and are aware that sorting trash is a difficult and messy process. We had to open bags, search, and then immediately re-bag the trash to avoid having litter blowing all over the JPD parking lot.

Finally, be careful not to be mistaken for a black bear, darted, and relocated far from town.
