Q. Overnight vehicle campers are back all along Gastineau Avenue. Please enforce/remove them "after hours" and not just M-F 8-4:30. You wouldn't want bums using the streets and ditches as bathrooms in YOUR neighborhood.

Dear Juneau Resident,

The patrol sergeants have been advised of this problem and will be checking. When you see the illegal camping after hours please call 586-0600 and report it.

This chronic issue seems to intensify every spring when people hoping for seasonal work try and stay near the downtown area. Those folks can often not afford housing so JPD tries to get them to go to campgrounds. The resistance we run into is the campgrounds do cost money and many are a long way from the downtown area so there is a fuel cost for moving the vehicles a couple of times a day. JPD ends up chasing people from one illegal site to another in downtown Juneau and Douglas as we respond to the legitimate complaints of homeowners, tenants, and recreational area users.
