Q. I have a soon to be 13 year old son that would love to ride along with a police officer. Is this a possibility?
Dear Juneau Resident,
I am very sorry, we don't do ride-a-longs with folks under 18. The reason for that is officers may have to go to a call that is too dangerous to take a rider with them even if the person stays in the car. Or a call can turn violent and the officer might be diverted from protecting other people at the scene or him or herself because the officer has to move the rider to a safe place. With someone who is 18 or older the officer can just drop the person off on the way to a higher risk call. If a call starts to turn ugly an officer can have an adult leave the call, even run away, and trust the adult will take care of themselves and get home okay. With someone 13, the officer would be 100% responsible for them from the start of the interaction until the minor was delivered back to a responsible adult.
However, all is not lost. You can call JPD and ask for a tour of the police department. We also have two downtown officers that you and your son could walk foot patrol with and if there was a higher risk call, you could bail and take your son to a safer place.
