Q. Where can I donate a car to charity in Juneau?

Dear Juneau Resident,

It is great you asked this question! People often don’t know what to do with cars they don’t want anymore, especially in Juneau where disposal is expensive. Some members of our community have been known to abandon cars on public property. That particular problem-solving technique creates work for JPD’s Community Service Officers who are usually the ones who have to tow the car and then hunt down and cite the registered owner.

If the car is in good shape, there are lots of options. You can go to the website for Catholic Community Services and look under ‘Ways to Donate’. It looks like that group will take cars and boats.

You can also call LOVE Inc, which is the point of contact for a network of churches. There could be a person or family in Juneau who would love to have your car. You can call the LOVE Inc. office at 780-4090.

If your car has reached the end of its useful life, you can call around to towing and recycling companies and get a price for disposing of the car.

You can also wait for a junked car roundup sponsored by the city. The roundups typically happen twice a year. For more information you can go to and check out what paperwork you will need to participate. The last event was August 31, 2009, so there probably isn’t one coming around for a while.
