Q. What are the rules about riding a bicycle in Juneau

Dear Juneau Resident,

When you are riding a bicycle in Juneau, think in terms of driving a car and follow the same rules. Ride with traffic, just off to the right if traffic is faster than you. Treat all traffic control devices the same as if you were in a car. That means stop at stop signs. CBJ ordinance requires that riders under 18 wear a helmet. Riders also need to walk bikes in pedestrian areas like crosswalks and stay off the sidewalks.

That said, there has to be some common sense applied. Sometimes the only safe place for children to ride is on the sidewalk and JPD isn't going to tell kids to ride on Riverside Drive right next to the cars.

If you have a more specific question please write again. As a general rule and when in doubt, ask yourself, "What would I do if I was driving a car?"
