Q. When should I call you guys about bears? What does the bear have to be doing for JPD to care?

Dear Juneau Resident,

JPD responds to bears who are reasonably creating a hazard to people or destroying property. If a bear is just being a bear in a place that makes people understandably a little uncomfortable, like walking through a neighborhood, JPD dispatch will refer people to Fish and Game.

The worst thing that can happen is for officers to go to every bear that turns up in town and start trying to scare them into other areas with lights, firecrackers, etc... That is a recipe for creating bears desensitized to humans and then the bears have to be destroyed. The policy at JPD is to leave the bears alone unless officers have to act to protect human life and property.

Another area of enforcement JPD does is if people are not securing their trash and creating a bear attraction, we will issue citations. Please call and report litter issues in your neighborhood.
