Questions Posted to "Ask a Dispatcher"
Q. I've been hearing a lot about a Juneau Christmas party being organized by Sam Dalin, chaplain for the Juneau Police Department. How does one become a chaplain for the police department? Is this an appointed position? How long has Mr. Dalin been the chaplain? From some of the things I have heard about this party, it sounds more like a Christian revival. What is the association of the police department with this party?
Dear Juneau Resident,
Staff at JPD has been invited to the party but that is our only association with the event. Sam Dalin is a volunteer Chaplain for JPD and CCFR and has been for many years. He really helped start that program. Sam shares Chaplain duties with Tom Matthews. There is a move underway to make the process of volunteering for that position and getting approved a more formalized process that it has been in the past. The Chaplains do a great job with meeting call out needs when there is a fatality. Officers are often busy with processing a scene and it is of great help to have someone there just for the families and friends of the person who has died. Often the Chaplains are providing support and assistance many hours after the officers have collected items and statements and left the scene.
If you have more questions about the party you should contact the organizers.
