Q. Is Facebook a viable means of gathering evidence from a missing persons/ runaway case? I have a friend who is a mutual friend of one of the younger people on the current list, and they have updated their Facebook status within the past month.

Dear Juneau Resident,

You should certainly call JPD with the information you are seeing on the Facebook page that might help us find a runaway/missing person. We do get calls from concerned members of the public and those people tell us what they read on social media or sometimes come to JPD and log in so we can collect a screen shot of what the person is posting.

For obvious reasons, discussing exactly what JPD and other law enforcement agencies can and cannot do with Facebook and other social media sites is not appropriate. It is important that you make no assumptions about what JPD can access without your help. If you have information that could help JPD find a person at risk you should call 586-0600 and report that information.
