Q. Is it legal to sell/buy guns on websites like Craigslist &/or Facebook's Juneau Buy~Sell~Trade? I've seen several listings for AR-15's & others lately & it made me curious.

Dear Juneau Resident,

The buying and selling of guns as a private citizen is legal. Firearms dealers have obligations to do background checks but those obligations do not apply to private citizens buying and selling guns for personal use.

This situation can lead to visions of two anonymous people meeting in an alley and trading a gun for money, like you see on tv. While that situation can happen either one of the parties can decide not to interact that way and to take steps to avoid ever contributing to future gun violence or supporting a burglar.

JPD encourages private citizens buying and selling guns to be as or more selective than the law requires of gun dealers. Nothing prohibits private gun buyers and sellers from checking IDs, checking public records, and sometimes passing on a sale because the account of how the person got a certain gun or why he or she wants a gun just doesn't pass the 'sniff' test.

JPD appreciates those responsible gun owners who call JPD, sometimes with a name and serial number, after turning down a sale or purchase because there are clues the gun is stolen or the buyer wants the gun for illegal reasons.
