Q. Is it legal for someone to search your vehicle if it is on their property?

Dear Juneau Resident,

Hmm, instinct says there is a lot more to this story that what is contained in the question.

As a general rule, people should not get into other people's cars, it is called criminal trespass. However, a reasonable belief that there was license or permission to enter can certainly muddy the waters. If this is a domestic situation with more than one person using the car, who can enter and who can allow someone else to enter can get very complicated.

If the car is abandoned on private property, the property owner can call JPD and our community service officers will get into the car to look for information about the owner.

Without more detail, that is the best info available.
