Q. I just read the warrant list and there is someone listed who was born in '98. I thought it was illegal to release an under aged person's name? Also, wouldn't the fault be on the parent/guardians? He is only 14. I feel like it should've been their responsibility to get him to the court house.
Dear Juneau Resident,
JPD is so glad you wrote in about this warrant being published. It has been removed! Our warrant information is pulled automatically and we were caught off guard by the City of Juneau Attorney's office getting a warrant for a juvenile. We hadn't seen that before and are used to juvenile cases going through the District Attorney's Office and we see a detention order that is not published. No one did anything inappropriate, just different. JPD did not have a filter built to keep a warrant for a juvenile from going out on JPD's weekly warrant list stemming from city charges. We have now altered the program to hide the names of people under 18 years of age who get warrants in city cases.
As far as the parent's responsibility to get the 14 year old to the courthouse, many of us that handle court appearances have sat in the courtroom with a parent who is uncomfortably texting and calling a teenager who doesn't show up or shows up too late with lots of excuses. An adults ability to make a 14 year old do something might be more limited than you think in many situations.
